Update: 02 March

Cllr Andrew Sawdon tells us that this planning application will now be considered at a planning committee hearing on 24 March.  This provides another opportunity for local residents opposed to this scheme to have their say.  Check on Lambeth Council website for further details.

Also, although the consultation period for comments expired on 25 February, Lambeth Council will now accept objections to or comments on the proposed development up to 19 March.  E-mail these to GChinniah@lambeth.gov.uk

  1. thanks april for sorting this.

as i said i spoke to case officer and architect. we have only till monday to comment on this! email him direct! gchinniah@lambeth.gov.uk. i will be putting up displays in the community centre mezzanine.

twoyears ago they planned to allow access to harleyford road garden so the project wouldnt be “gated” thats been dropped.

also agreed to land gift to community centre to buffer the development from the cafe and centre. thats been dropped.

all because the profit return are lower (but clearly still massive) on this as opposed to the former proposal! i might add there is a history of venues being closed down by new developments when residents complain. it would be a shame to have the traditions of the centre compromised by this new development.

the development also include yet more car and concrete. green roofs that i suspect will not be maintained and if one looks clearly at the boundaries they are incorrectly drawn.

that aside this is a loss of light industrial space and if one adds this to the loss of employment space at christies development then we see yet more loss of useful employment opportunities in our local area!

if we are to loose this employment land lets have it as a community garden for all the residents bordering the plot? esp for those on harleyford’s busy and dangerous road! trees not tarmac!

Frankly I would rather see houses there and even a courtyard than “light industrial space”.
“if we are to loose this employment land”- having known someone who lived and had a bedroom overlooking this area where there used to be a car workshop it was pretty dire (pollution from paint sprays and noise).
You do realise this is a residential area (I suspect the developer is attempting to address this by building housing with ‘green roofs’)- children are growing up in the area, people have working lives and have to get up early etc.
And much as I support the cafe and centre it has also had it’s fair share of noise complaints from surrounding residents.
“loss of employment space at christies” - I find this outcry that it will be a student hall (and THAT leaflet) pretty feeble and a narrow view. Surely education is also about industrious students and future lives/professions? I spoke to a respectable mature prospective student recently who doesn’t have the good fortune to live in central london and so has to find accommodation like many.

    Thank you for this information.

We have only just received a letter from council informing and consulting us about it, giving us til 16 April to respond.

Without your blog I wouldn’t have been able to identify the site. we thought they might be trying to build on the community garden.

And is it the case, deduced from the comments above and the pdf, that will could involve closing or compromising the Bonnington Square cafe?
