Here’s an update on the Vauxhall Area Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)

Lambeth Council has produced a draft Vauxhall Area Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), which was consulted on in November and December 2008.

The purpose of the Vauxhall Area SPD when approved by the Council will be to give local guidance and detail interpretation of the policies contained in the adopted Lambeth Unitary Development Plan at Vauxhall.

The finalisation of the Vauxhall Area SPD is linked to the publication of a draft version of the GLA’s wider Vauxhall Nine Elms & Battersea Opportunity Area Planning Framework (VNEB OAPF), which extends into the London Borough of Wandsworth.

This wider document, while not a statutory planning document, will provide a broad joined up framework towards supporting development in the opportunity area across both Lambeth and Wandsworth, including importantly the proposed transport infrastructure required to support development and appropriate locations for tall buildings.

The Vauxhall area SPD provides more detailed guidance within the overall framework.  It is therefore important that there is alignment between the two documents.  The GLA and TfL have been involved in contributing to the preparation of the Vauxhall Area SPD, and Lambeth Council Officers have also been involved in work on the preparation of the OAPF.  To ensure alignment the Council have had to wait for the finalisation of the draft OAPF.  Its initial timetable has slipped, and public consultation is now due to take place from the end of October 2009

The next step would be to  finalise the Vauxhall Area SPD and report it to Cabinet for approval.  The LDF core strategy policies for Vauxhall carries through the aspirations and direction of the Vauxhall Area SPD and is in general conformity with the strategy in the OAPF.

  1. Lambeth rushed to consult on an earlier version of this plan, last year, despite being warned that the new mayor was likely to change its terms of reference and that they (Lambeth) would have to go back to the drawing board…..
